3M's Brainstorming notes

Midsch, Mahouni2000 and Matrixpoint have been brainstorming about decentralization and privacy solutions for the past 6 months (as of 10/2009). A few more pages may appear here summarizing our explorations, such as this P2P resources page. Our goal was to make use of existing systems, but we haven't yet found a ready-to-deploy solution. Thus, more work needs to be done. (The less, the better.) Very briefly, we see three main areas of technical activity to pursue:

  • Encourage sub-communities within the big social sites like Facebook, perhaps by developing custom apps for them.
  • Develop a decentralized (P2P) trust/search network. A Java-based solution named Nexus is under development.

Some non-technical areas to explore are:

  • Universal standards or guidelines for trust, safety, and privacy.
  • What constitutes an identity/reputation in the virtual world?
