A couch is synonymous with the sleeping arrangement or accommodation provided by a host on a hospitality exchange network. Even though it may be referred to as a couch the sleeping arrangements provided by the host may be any number of things, including a couch, but also a bed, mattress or space on the floor. The name has it's origins in the concept of 'couchsurfing', a term which originally referred to the practice of moving from one friend's house to another, sleeping in whatever spare space is available. In this sense the idea of a couch as as a synonym for sleeping arrangement pre-dates the CouchSurfing hospitality exchange network.
