Feedback from Couchwiki
* I'm probably the last one standing: Yes, there is no significant activitiy here anymore and some stuff is broken (i. e. wikilinks for flags) for ages. I just follow the recent changes feed and clear out spam. So the dead of couchwiki won't be a loss for the world. Still, just moving (instead of copying) everything to trustroots feels a bit like hijacking to me. (And it's only possible because guaka runs it. And I may see it this way because I left trustroots after a very shot time and didn't followed it anymore.) Midsch (talk) 16:24, 5 December 2018 (CET)
::Good to see you here, Midsch!
::I'm the first one to completely agree that it feels a bit like hijacking.  I didn't propose this, I just posted on meta.trustroots.org to improve couchwiki. But when it was proposed I thought it was a good idea.
::So I hope this transition can be considered a benevolent hijack? (It also reminds me of how some people hear "hijacking" when others say "hitchhiking" :)
::Overall I prefer less things to maintain than more. Setting up a complete new wiki (and writing a script to copy everything) would be extra work and not much is gained by keeping Couchwiki in a zombie state that will at some point be taken over by spambots...
::(Which reminds me of Alex Steinhart's hospitality wiki, long gone and almost completely forgotten after it was unmaintained and killed by spam. I kinda think it's nice to not let all this information here end up at archive.org, where no one can even find it. Or the end of the original CouchSurfing wiki in 2009.)
::I'd also like to find a way to ensure that the wikis I'm hosting will survive myself (esp. hitchwiki, and also trashwiki), in the future Trustroots Foundation could be that way.  guaka (talk) 16:40, 5 December 2018 (CET)
::: You've mentioned the loss of the free couchsurfing wiki. The result of this sad story was creating a new network independent wiki. This one. But we need to be honest, the idea failt. Users of the single networks didn't know of it, didn't use wikis or simply didn't care enough. In the meantime some networks went down the drain, some are in a similar zombie state than couchwiki, some a still alive for their small groups of active users. This said, I can imagine to close down couchwiki for good. But if we do so, the idea of keeping the work and move it to a place where it gets some more love, sounds good to me. Especially when it is still accessible without an TR account. Midsch (talk) 17:00, 5 December 2018 (CET) (PS: Giving the keys to the wikis to a legal, non profit institution, to make it independent from a single person, is a good idea. Even free content can be lost, if the server or access to it gets lost.)
::::I think in the beginning (directly after the wiki was removed from CS) there was an interest in couchwiki. But now this interest disappeared and most people even don't know that couchwiki is there. What are the alternatives? Letting Couchwiki slowly die? Adding Couchwiki to nomadwiki? I think it fits much better as Trustroots wiki. If it's technically possible, why not having TR accounts and accounts for the wiki only. Another option would be to offer Couchwiki to other websites as well. But I doubt that BeWelcome would be interested. Yes, it was me, I proposed to move Couchwiki to TR instead of nomadwiki.Iotrj (talk) 12:12, 6 December 2018 (CET)

Instead of starting a completely empty Trustroots Wiki we took over Couchwiki. This gives us quite a lot of good stuff to start with and it also avoids all the useful things of Couchwiki to become forgotten and lost.

Couchwiki was launched in 2009 but its history goes back before that.
