Be aware of unpredictible weather<br />
There is a fine if you get caught camping in your car or tent without a DOC pass. Pick them up from the Department of Conversation in Te Anau.
A guided tour bus to Milford Sound is expensive but worthwhile, with a cruise on the sound a must.<br />
Autumn is a fabulous time for colour. Roads may be closed in winter due to snow and ice.
Beware of sandflies - they are plentiful and hungry for blood (especially fresh tourist blood!) Be sure to have plenty of strong insect repellent ('''Dimp''' works well).
