==Neighborhoods== The city is composed of 19 large boroughs, subdivided into neighbourhoods. Many of these boroughs were independent cities that were forced to be merged with Montreal in January 2002. However, following a referendum some municipalities decided to became independent again in 2006. Nowadays, all those boroughs and municipalities resulting from the 2006 demerger create a metropolis offering a variety of unique neighbourhoods reinforced by a strong multicultural population. Despite, some historical and Chinese features (Chinese hospital, the gates, etc.), you will find a more discrete but more active Chinese community in Chinatown West near [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concordia_University the second English speaking university]. Canada legalized Gay marriage since 2005 and the tolerance of local people help to create an healthy environment for this community. The village suffered from the recent economic crisis but remain a landmark neighborhoud in the city with a pleasant atmosphere. === Quartier Latin - For an evening in a more Latin environment === [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quartier_Latin,_Montreal Le Quartier Latin] around one the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universit%C3%A9_du_Qu%C3%A9bec_%C3%A0_Montr%C3%A9al French speaking univeristy] renown for its fin arts or sociology programs among others, is good place to have a local beers on a terrace or in one of the numerous bars. === West Side - For an evening in a more Anglo-Saxon environment === The [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Laurent_Boulevard Main] is the limit between West and East (for street numbers and direction, - #1 will be the closest to the south / Saint-Lawrence river) and unofficially divide the city between the English speaking community (West) and French Speaking community (East).
