Niort has an intimate relationship with the Sèvre Niortaise river. '''Its Dungeon, one of the most beautiful twin-towered Roman dungeons''' to be found in France, proudly towers over the river. Behind this modest fortification snuggle the hills of Notre-Dame and Saint André, each of which blessed with an elegant church. At the foot of the old quarter of the town stands the « Pilori » which was formerly one of the mayoral administrative buildings. In the same part of town we find Baltard’s market hall, which displays the modern face of Niort – a town traditionally associated with trade.

From the town centre right up to the start of the Marais Poitevin, the man-made embankments of the Sèvre offer a corridoor of green and pleasant land ideal for walking and fishing. This stretch has been named the « Coulée Verte ».
