Bulgaria is bordered on the east by the Black Sea and the Danube in the north, by Macedonia and Serbia to the west and by Greece to the south. A country of 7 million people it now has more than 70% of the population living in urban areas, and many villages have become depopulated. Bulgaria has been settled since ancient times and has seen many cultures and people
come and go, including Thracians, Ottoman Turks, Mongols, Crusaders and the Byzantine Empire. This chequered history has left behind a diverse culture.

In more recent times collectivization and de-collectivization has had a significant impact on the land and the people in rural areas. The country also has a strong nomadic heritage, and some Bulgarians such as the Karakachan ethnic minority still practise nomadic pastoralism with sheep and goats. Subsistence farming still feeds a significant proportion of the population.

The climate is continental, with hot summers changing sharply into cold winters. Cereals and sunflowers are grown on a large scale on the plains of the Danube valley and the Trakian plains between the Stara Planina, Rila, Pirin and Rodope mountain ranges. Dairy farming is a strong tradition and the yogurt cultured with [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactobacillus_delbrueckii_subsp._bulgaricus *Lactobacillus bulgaricus*] is justifiably famous. ==Rural in Canada?==

The vast emptiness of the great white north. The shimmering colours of the aurora borealis. The sweeping fields of the prairies. Rural Canada is simply some of the most breathtaking land this world has to offer. At 9,984,670 km2 (3,854,082 mi2), Canada is the second biggest country by landmass but yet it's home to just over 35 million people, most of who live close to the Canadian/American border. With one of the lowest population densities in the world this just means there is that much more untouched beauty and splendor for you to get out there and explore!

This group is here to provide information and give travelers a chance to get out there and experience the rural life of Canada which is nothing short of stunning. In time we hope to develop an excellent network of rural hosts all over Canada in order to give people the chance to witness what many of us get to live everyday.

So what really is rural in Canada? For the purposes of rural hospitality we would generally consider those living in communities of less than 1000 people to be rural, but exceptions can be made for more rural regions of Canada where any villages are a rare sight! Please do not be upset if your slightly larger rural area is not considered "rural enough" to be placed on the map, but these are the guidelines that the rural CS team agreed to follow as a whole.

Rural areas change as the landscape changes. Please check your country page to find out information about anything rural related.

The meaning of rural changes from place to place, and while we have put a general population limitation in place we encourage people to come up with their own definition that suites their area, along with a matching icon. Moderators of the relevant group should maintain a basic wiki page for their respective area, if for nothing else than to explain the process of how to be added to the map.

== Promotion ==

Rural Hospex has mostly spread through word of mouth and by people reading the groups within the website www.couchsurfing.org. It is hoped that it will transcend couchsurfing and be open for members of all hospitality exchange websites.

This group has just started (August 2012) but it is hoped that will become active and a place for people to interact about their rural experiences.
