Getting there and around
By foot
Often the easiest choice in Darmstadt, walking from one end of Darmstadt to the other can be achieved in one hour. Inner city distances are way shorter and seldom take longer then 15 minutes.

By bicycle
If the weather plays along, definitely the fastest and most convenient mode of transport in Darmstadt. As there are hardly any hills, low to average training will do. The only nuisance are sometimes interrupted cycle lanes.

If you are looking for a used bike, there are two mayor trading shops: "Fahrrad Verleih Darmstadt" right next to the main station and "Auktion & Kauf" in Pankratiusstraße 7. The major train company in Germany is "Deutsche Bahn" servicing the main station.
The main station is located about 1 1/2 kilometers west of the city center. Bus- and tramlines to the "Luisenplatz" run every few minutes till after midnight.

By car
Due to the compact size of Darmstadt, you're usually quicker by foot, bicycle or public transport. Finding a free parking spot in the inner city is quite a gamble, but there are plenty, reasonably priced car parks.

There's also a range of local taxi/cab services, some of which allow pre-booking. Taxis/cabs are generally regulated and trustworthy in Germany.
By airplaine
There are two airports in the region:
For train connections check Deutsche Bahn. Many local taxi/cab services provide airport flat rates around 35€ if booked in advance.
* Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN/EDFH) is situated in a remote are nowhere near Frankfurt or Darmstadt, they try to make of for it cheap airfares, reasonably prices long-term parking and shuttle buses. There is no direct bus or train connection from Darmstadt to Frankfurt Hahn but you have to can there via Frankfurt.

Getting around
As Darmstadt is not too large most aims can be reached in an acceptable time by walking or by bike. Alternatively you can use the well developed public transport (check the website of the RMV for time tables). Darmstadt is also very well connected to Frankfurt.
Other languages
There's also a version of Couchwiki in French now :) The links aren't working properly yet. I'll happily set up other languages if there's enough interest, (especially German, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or Swedish). We just need some people (or even just one person) who is willing to take care of it enough, i.e. put up a front page and check for spam regularly, and ideally make sure there are new articles every week. ==Feature request: Category sitemap in footer==
If we could find an extension to display a context-sensitive sitemap based on the categories of a page, wouldn't that be awesome? Maybe this could even be done with jquery, so the browser could cache the category information between requests, and it doesn't add up to page size.

(maybe "sitemap" is the wrong term here, because I only want to show related stuff)

I could work on that when I have time.

Basic Organization of the wiki
Well there are a few pages and enough interest to start talking a little bit about how to organize the wiki. So far there seem to be 3 kinds of pages- location guide pages, pages about the wiki, and other pages. The later two will sort themselves out but the location guides follow an obvious logical hierarchy- World, region, country, (state, province), city, and extra pages attached to one of those levels like "Cycling in Germany" or "100 things to do in.." simple wiki links and templates could keep the pages organized according to the above logic and categories could help enforce it. does everyone pretty much agree on this?

I also want to say that generic categories like "Cities" or "country guides" are not useful and should be avoided. what do you guys think? --Metal.lunchbox 04:16, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

:Hey Lunchbox! I agree. Feel free to remove those generic categories. guaka 22:39, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
:: Actually I like a category like Hamburg, as it keeps all Hamburg related stuff together. But obviously it doesn't make sense if there is only one page for a city. BTW: Heavy usage of templates makes everything look the same and clean, but it stops people from editing as it looks complicate at first. Midsch 19:52, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
Shared user accounts and shared images
Data dumps
The availability of frequently updated XML dumps of the database (content only, no user data) would increase the sustainability and reusability of couchwiki. This seems to be listed as todo at Couchwiki:Tech. Will this be done in the near future?--Konrad 20:59, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
Offline versions
In a discussion with Tim he mentioned the idea of an offline versions (e.g. in epub format) which might be handy for travelers. There is an MediaWiki extension for epub export but I have no experiences with it so far. --Konrad 20:59, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
I used a web service like Web2FB to convert wikitravel pages for my ebook reader. While this is an easy solution, it might put more load on the server than necessary. --Tim 21:12, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Darmstadt is a city in Hesse quite close to Frankfurt.

Hospitality Networks
Couchsurfing
Darmstadt has very active CouchSurfing Group. There a very often spontaneous meetings e.g. for picnic in the Herrngarten or for a drink at a cosy bar. For sure anyone is very welcome to join!

BeWelcome
Darmstadt's BeWelcome group is currently quite rudimentary, but it is becoming more active. We might start cross posting CouchSurfing events.

Sight Seeing
Do
Darmstadt offers a variety of actives and interesting places. To get some ideas check 100 things to do in Darmstadt. If you want even more fun ask in the CouchSurfing or the BeWelcome group for others to join you!

For bike repair there are plenty little shops all over town.

By train
The major train company in Germany is "Deutsche Bahn" servicing the main station.
The main station is located about 1 1/2 kilometers west of the city center. Bus- and tramlines to the "Luisenplatz" run every few minutes till after midnight.

There's also the "Odenwaldbahn", connecting Darmstadt to Frankfurt and the Odenwald.

* Frankfurt Airport (FRA/EDDF) the busiest international airport in Germany, connected to almost any place in the world. The quickest way to get to Darmstadt from the airport is the "Airliner".

Getting around
As Darmstadt is not too large most aims can be reached in an acceptable time by walking or by bike. Alternatively you can use the well developed public transport (check the website of the RMV for time tables). Darmstadt is also very well connected to Frankfurt.

Weather
In summer Darmstadt is quite warm in the comparison to German average.

You can find information about the current weather and the weather forecast here.
