Sorry, online miscommunication, I was in a hurry and missed out on the appropriate emoticon: ;) or :P to say I was joking/not serious about CS being a cult. I however wasn’t joking about neo-tribalism which is both positive and negative like most things in life – a balanced (which yes includes contradictory information) view is necessary

The linked page is satire. Further details are below if interested.

While I’ve now paid my insurance so personally it matters not to me on the bigger scale it does to CouchSurfing as a whole. How so? Some more points:

-	you’ve had 100 couchsurfer’s over the last year who have been all vouched at least 5 times and have 10s of positive references. A burglar comes in and steals something. Insurance company denies claim when they found out you’re a couchsurfer because you let stranger’s in the house.

The above is a very hasty scenario which probably isn’t fully valid and over-cautious designed to spark further discussions. While it is sometimes true that bridges are best cross when you come to it perhaps like hash house harrier’s, a social running group, where trails are laid using talcum powder and there was an incident where the authorities thought it was terrorism. Perhaps an appropriate document could be made up for insurance companies to ensure they are fully informed that it’s not really risky if used properly.

Or like my original question which ones are already couchsurfer friendly?

The other point is that there are over 40,000 couchsurfers in Australia. Say 10% are active and local. That’s 4000 people. Now say 30% read this thread – that’s 1200 people. Now if 1200 times 500 average insurance that’s 600,000 which I suppose is relatively small in insurance stakes but still worth influencing. So write your opinion.

I am aware of the parallels between this and <a href=” http://queenslandclimbing.yuku.com/topic/4391”>Managing risks in rock climbing> - that is reduce the major risks first and then the minor risks last.

In Victoria there's this CS'er called Aaron Schultz. He has a reputation for organizing big number pub crawls attracting a hundred CS'ers and forcing venues to open half an hour earlier then normal. He makes up a google map with a list of off the beat pubs and bars and people move between them. Not everything goes to plan but what ever does?

Let's see if we can beat them - not perhaps by sheer numbers and maybe not even by per capita numbers but by having a greater idea then them. It's all in good fun.

We'd need enough cars/buses to move people 1 hour per location between the 3 locations.

It's fun to people watch when out at the state library of qld surfing the net from the free wifi don't you think?

If we make it a Christmas type event it will have to be done soon

It’s important to express interest early and this provides maximum bargaining power with the bar provider's. If they know that they’re certain to get a certain amount of income at a future date then they will be more willing to discount or provide additional services. It’s also my preferred way of interacting – relaxed win win propositions. Yes we can as a group wait till last minute and demand a cheaper price but that’s not likely to mean a good will long term relationship with the provider.

A number of other clubs I'm involved with have gotten half price drinks. To merge it with the Couchsurfing ethos perhaps we could ask for custom world music from around the world? Or even allow us as an online group to have photos of various exotic locations there.

Perhaps get projector's in? Laptops with USB sticks?
At a dance school there is even ratio's at the start but girls tend to flake out while boys are more reliable. Even though thye have paid it people still don't come. The solution by the dance provider was to do group SMS of other people later. A CRM application might be needed as well to get regular people involved.

This is an outlandish suggestion probably but let's see how we can make it practical.
